Hypnotherapy for children £60phr
Children have the most wonderful and vibrant imaginations. It has been shown by MRI scans that the brain cannot tell the difference between what is real and that which is only imagined or visualized. Thus such creative and usually vivid, imaginations ensure that most children make extremely good candidates for hypnotherapy. A good hypnotherapist will employ this amazing power of the mind and the child's belief or acceptance in the therapist as a person of authority to encourage visualizations that can create enormous change for them almost immediately.

[Hypnotherapy in the treatment of refractory nocturnal enuresis][Article in Norwegian]
Diseth TH, Vandvik IH.
BACKGROUND: Nocturnal enuresis represents a practical, social and emotional problem. The present study illustrates the advantage of using hypnosis as a therapy in chronic cases. MATERIAL: Twelve boys, median age 12 years (range 8-16), eight with primary nocturnal enuresis and four with primary nocturnal and diurnal enuresis, reported at referral a median of 0 (range 0-3) dry nights per week. All patients had a family history of enuresis and had used enuresis alarm and Desmopressin; 50% used Imipramin. Eight had been referred to psychological or psychiatric services for treatment. METHODS: All patients had undergone a somatic assessment by a paediatrician, a paediatric surgeon, or an urologist. After a preliminary assessment of motivation, they underwent hypnotherapy with a median of six sessions (range 2-8), followed by median one month with self-hypnosis exercises. RESULTS: At follow-up after three months and one year, nine out of 12 patients had respectively 6-7/7, and 7/7 dry nights per week. Three patients had nocturnal enuresis at follow-up; two of them were referred to a paediatric surgeon for their overactive urine bladder and one was referred to his local psychiatric clinic because of ongoing family conflicts. INTERPRETATION: Hypnotherapy had lasting effects for boys with chronic and complex forms of nocturnal enuresis. We suggest that hypnotherapy should be included in the therapeutic guidelines.
The effectiveness of hypnosis for reducing procedure-related pain in children and adolescents: a comprehensive methodological review.
Accardi MC, Milling LS.
Department of Psychology, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford, CT 06117, USA.
A comprehensive, methodologically informed review of studies of the effectiveness of hypnosis for reducing procedure-related pain in children and adolescents is provided. An exhaustive search identified 13 studies satisfying these criteria. Hypnosis was consistently found to be more effective than control conditions in alleviating discomfort associated with bone marrow aspirations, lumbar punctures, voiding cystourethograms, the Nuss procedure, and post-surgical pain.

Despite the fact that nurses are in key positions to learn and use hypnosis to bolster a child's symptom management, ability to solve problems, or self-esteem, they lack knowledge about the clinical effectiveness of hypnosis. Substantial clinical literature demonstrates that hypnosis effectively reduces anxiety, enhances coping, and has been used successfully to treat behavior disorders, school phobias, and sleep disorders. Hypnosis can effectively reduce a child's anxiety and symptoms and has few side effects when used competently. With education and supervision, nurses can effectively use hypnosis to improve a child's mastery and self-esteem and to reduce severe levels of anxiety.

I also utilize a few fun pre-hypnotic tests to show them the power that they possess in their minds and of course win their trust and support as well as engage their enthusiasm. I will also endeavor to utilize images and characters from their world- such as a current trend like Hannah Montana and use her as an example of confidence .This ensures that the information, examples and communication is relevant and meaningful to each child.
Hypnotherapy for children is very successful with a wide range of conditions such as:
- Bed wetting (enuresis)
- Thumb sucking which often leads to nail biting
- Fears and phobias of any kind which if caught early enough may be removed or reduced for life
- Stress at school such as bullying, exam stress, social confidence
- Dealing with anger
- Bereavement
- Performance enhancement such as sports or dance, drama and of course exam performance
- Nightmares etc
- Many many more
As a parent it is very important that you present hypnotherapy to the child as something that will be fun and absolutely successful. Present the hypnotherapist as a person of great skill and knowledge. It is often the case that parents do not understand the power of their words however nonchenantly they are spoken and so how the process is described and the child prepared is paramount.
Neither the child- or the parent- have anything to fear or feel anxious about as hypnotherapy is just as safe and ethical as it is for adults. The irony is that as parents we may feel wary of 'playing with a child's mind' and yet hypnotherapy as previously mentioned is often more powerful and successful due to the very plasticity of that mind!
As a parent myself I fully understand that you may want to be present during the session and usually this is not recommended as a relationship of honesty and trust must be built with the child. If the parent is present that can be compromised or the child may feel unable to be totally open- perhaps not wanting to 'say the wrong thing ' etc. However if the parent absolutely wants to stay for the 1st session , I am happy to allow that but they must be aware about the message that gives the child about the parents trust in the therapist!
I offer a lovely informal approach that will relax and benefit your child. As a meditation/ visualization teacher and coach I bring additional skills to working with children and can teach them breathing techniques that can be used in stressful situations for the rest of their lives!! I am also a parent and thus offer a special and valuable kind of empathy and understanding when dealing with children.
I am CRB checked-October 2009 and have had formal child protection training.
