                   Cancer and Psychoneuroimmuniology (PNI)

Hypnotherapy is at the forefront of a new discipline called psychoneuroimmuniology (PNI) and it relates to the power and influence that the mind has over hormones, antibodies and white cells etc. Recent research is now showing  that certain conditioning techniques such as NLP, visualization and meditation* can influence biochemical and immunological processes. How we think and feel about the world and our lives also has a profound affect on how a patient responds to the disease and chemotherapy etc.

meditation* Meditation has been shown to increase the activity of The Natural Killer cells (NK) that hunt and destroy abnormal or cancerous cells in the body by up to 30%.

Prolonged exposure to depression and anxiety depresses NK activity!.

PNI is based on certain premises:

  • Mind and body are 2 parts of one whole; an integration of physical, psychological, intellectual and spiritual factors and as such must all be treated equally.
  • A patients healing and recovery are heavily influenced by not only their attitude and belief, but by that of the Doctors treating them.(Placebo effect)
  • Every patient requires an individualized plan and also needs to be involved in the nature and implementation of their own personal care plan.

These premises are basically reminding us of how powerful our minds are and how effective we all can be in our own healing.

The mind creates the body!

Hypnotherapy can help with Cancer treatment and recovery and for other diseases and pain by:

  • Reducing side effects of treatment and releasing repressed emotion which it is thought may be one element that can lead to disease in the first place.
  • Reducing pain by creating analgesia by direct suggestion and visualization
  • Using deep relaxation techniques for the whole body and mind
  • Alter and positively affect immunological processes by visualization
  • Provide counselling and goal setting
  • Deal with negative personality traits or a pessimistic outlook on life
  • Use regression to clear any negative energy from past situations/relationships or events affecting the present day outlook for the patient*

* In a study regarding breast cancer, 80% of patients categorized as having a 'fighting spirit' were still alive after 10 years whilst only 25% were still alive of those categorized as helpless/hopeless after 10 years (S.Greer)

PLEASE NOTE: That the Hypnotherapy is an additional treatment to that as directed by your Doctor and the stopping of prescribed drug taking or other treatments is not recommended.

However, always remember this interesting fact...there is not a single type of Cancer for which there has not been a recorded case of spontaneous cure!

My experience of using Reiki and obviously my expertise as a meditation teacher means that by choosing to have your hypnotherapy with me I can bring additional skills and knowledge to ease your suffering and make your recovery from any form of pain an easier experience. I will teach you and provide a personal CD that will teach you self hypnosis in order to manage your ongoing treatment and pain into the future. This puts you firmly in a place of control and reduces costs to you.

                      Irritable Bowel Syndrome ( IBS)

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a digestive disorder that many people have, but few people talk about. It is estimated that IBS affects up to 15% of the population with its symptoms of chronic stomach pain and major disturbance of bowel functioning. IBS can entail bouts of diarrhea, episodes of chronic constipation, or a pattern of alternating between the two. IBS is considered a functional disorder, in that it involves a malfunction in how the intestinal system works, but doesn't show up in any visible disease process or tissue damage. If you have IBS, you know first hand how intense the disorder can be and how it can cause significant disruption in the ability to attend to the tasks of daily life. There is much debate however that because IBS has a strong element of psychosommatic cause about it , this makes it a condition that is extremely successful with treatment by hypnotherapy-see some research evidence below and there is a lot more on the site detailed.

Whorwell PJ; Prior A; Faragher EB. Controlled trial of hypnotherapy in the treatment of severe refractory irritable-bowel syndrome. The Lancet 1984, 2: 1232-4.
This study is the earliest and perhaps the best study in this research area to date, as it was thoroughly placebo-controlled and showed dramatic contrast in response to hypnosis treatment above the placebo group. Thirty patients with severe symptoms unresponsive to other treatment were randomly chosen to receive 7 sessions of hypnotherapy (15 patients) or 7 sessions of psychotherapy plus placebo pills (15 patients). The psychotherapy group showed a small but significant improvement in abdominal pain and distension, and in general well-being but not bowel activity pattern. The hypnotherapy patients showed a dramatic improvement in all central symptom. The hypnotherapy group showed no relapses during the 3-month follow-up period.

Whorwell PJ; Prior A; Colgan SM. Hypnotherapy in severe irritable bowel syndrome: further experience. Gut, 1987 Apr, 28:4, 423-5.
This report summed up further experience with 35 patients added to the 15 treated with hypnotherapy in the 1984 Lancet study. For the whole 50 patient group, success rate was 95% for classic IBS cases, but substantially less for IBS patients with atypical symptom picture or significant psychological problems. The report also observed that patients over age 50 seemed to have lower success rate from this treatment.

Harvey RF; Hinton RA; Gunary RM; Barry RE. Individual and group hypnotherapy in treatment of refractory irritable bowel syndrome. Lancet, 1989 Feb, 1:8635, 424-5.
This study employed a shorter hypnosis treatment course than other studies for IBS, and the success rate was lower, most likely demonstrating that a larger number of sessions is necessary for optimal benefit. Twenty out of 33 patients with refractory irritable bowel syndrome treated with four sessions of hypnotherapy in this study improved. Improvement was maintained at a 3-month treatment. These researchers further found that hypnosis treatment for IBS in groups of up to 8 patients seems as effective as individual therap

Alongside the Hypnotherapy of course run my excellent skills in the power of creative visualisation which i teach and thus as this is one of the most powerful and successful parts of IBS treatment with hypnotherapy I can offer more than the average therapist.

                     Surgery-Preparation and recovery

Professor David Spiegel, of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences at Stanford University, wants the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) to sanction sweeping changes.

He will tell the Royal Society of Medicine on Monday that Nice should add hypnotherapy to its list of approved therapeutic techniques for the treatment of conditions ranging from allergies and high blood pressure to the pain associated with cancer treatment and bone marrow transplantation.

"It is time for hypnosis to work its way into the mainstream of British medicine," says Professor Spiegel.

"There is solid science behind what sounds like mysticism and we need to get that message across to the bodies that influence this area.

"Hypnosis has no negative side-effects. It makes operations quicker, as the patient is able to talk to the surgeon as the operation proceeds, and it is cheaper than conventional pain relief. Since it does not interfere with the workings of the body, the patient recovers faster, too.

"It is also extremely powerful as a means of pain relief. Hypnosis has been accepted and rejected because people are nervous of it. They think it's either too powerful or not powerful enough, but, although the public are sceptical, the hardest part of the procedure is getting other doctors to accept it."

Last year, the Daily Telegraph reported how a pensioner had knee surgery using just hypnosis to control the pain.

Trained hypnotist Bernadine Coady, 67, was wide awake for the one-hour operation, which is usually performed under a general anaesthetic.

A spokesman for the National Council for Hypnotherapy said of her case that the technique has been used for centuries for pain relief.

He added: "It is used often other countries, for example Belgium, as an alternative to anaesthetics and patients report that it is very successful, that they feel no pain during their operations."

The theory behind medical hypnosis is that the body's brain and nervous system cannot always distinguish an imagined situation from a real occurrence. As a result the brain can act on any image or verbal suggestion as if it were reality.

Hypnosis puts patients into a state of deep relaxation that is very susceptible to imagery; the more vivid this imagery, the greater the effect on the body.

Nice said it would welcome submissions for hypnotherapy to be considered as an approved therapeutic technique on the NHS if it could be cost-effective and consistent delivery could be guaranteed.

Hypnotherapy is a very useful tool for the whole surgical process and I can personally vouch for the incredible powerful effects that it had when I used it for my own surgery preparation and recovery recently. I was discharged quicker than expected, had incredibly quicker scar healing than was anticipated and needed no pain killers after surgery at all.

 Research on SURGERY

40. Patients undergoinghead and neck surgery who were trained with preoperative hypnosis had a significantly shorter post operative hospitalization than matched control cases

41.Swedish researchers studied 50 women prior to surgery. 25 formed a control group who had no hypnotherapy whilst 25 were briefly hypnotised everyday for several days before their operations. After surgery10 experienced some nausea whereas 15 reported none at all compared to 17 experiencing nausea in the control group

Hypnotherapy can address:

  • The illness, fears and anxiety about any part of the process and help to manage any physical pain
  • Rehearse the medical procedures before, during and after surgery
  • Address and ease any psychological issues that may be being brought up by the illness or the surgery itself
  • Speed recovery
  • Increase optimism and motivation
