People smoke for many reasons ranging from a coping strategy to deal with stress, to pleasure of the feel of the 'draw' and of course addiction!

Here are some interesting and relevant facts:

  • Nicotine is a stimulant and the fastest addictive drug known to man. The Nicotine content of one cigarette injected into the veins would kill a human being.
  • There are more than 4,000 other chemicals in cigarette smoke, many of which are known to cause cancer. In particular it is the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and nitrosamines that are the probable causative agents for lung and other cancers.
  • Smoking cigarettes are a well-known cause of  chronic lung disease, heart disease, and other disorders.
  • It is not the nicotine in cigarettes, but the tar that causes the unsightly yellow-brown stains on fingers and teeth.

The costs :

20 Cigarettes costing £5.50 per day = a saving on quitting of

  • £28.88 per week
  • £125.47 per month
  • £1505.63 per year
  • £15, 056.25 over 10 years!!!
  • Not forgetting the smelly hair, breath, yellow teeth and hands.
  • Likelihood of continuous health problems until early onset death!!

Research director for The National Council for Hypnotherapy, Josephine Teague recently posted the following piece of research evidence.

Research on the effectiveness of hypnosis for quitting smoking

To find the most effective method to stop smoking Frank Schmidt and research student Chockalingham Viswesvaran from the university of Iowa used a meta-analysis, utilising the results of more than 600 studies totalling nearly 72,000 people.
The results, which were published in the Journal of Applied Psychology and included 48 studies of hypnosis covering 6000 smokers, clearly showed that hypnosis, to use the same terminology as the quit counsellor, was three times more effective than NRT.

Research shows that the success rate for hypnosis is above 66% . Compare that to the success rates of trying to quit without help 5%, using behavior therapy 25% or using Nicotine Replacement Products, 25% and hypnosis is a wise choice.

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2007) — Hospitalized patients who smoke may be more likely to quit smoking through the use of hypnotherapy than patients using other smoking cessation methods. A new study*  shows that smoking patients who participated in one hypnotherapy session were more likely to be nonsmokers at 6 months compared with patients using nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) alone or patients who quit "cold turkey". The study also shows that patients admitted to the hospital with a cardiac diagnosis are three times more likely to quit smoking at 6 months than patients admitted with a pulmonary diagnosis.

"Our results showed that hypnotherapy resulted in higher quit rates compared with NRT alone," said Faysal Hasan, MD, FCCP, North Shore Medical Center, Salem, MA. Dr. Hasan and colleagues from North Shore Medical Center and Massachusetts General Hospital compared the quit rates of 67 smoking patients hospitalized with a cardiopulmonary diagnosis. All patients were approached about smoking cessation and all included in the study were patients who expressed a desire to quit smoking.

At discharge, patients were divided into four groups based on their preferred method of smoking cessation treatment: hypnotherapy (n=14), NRT (n=19), NRT and hypnotherapy (n=18), and a group of controls who preferred to quit "cold turkey" (n=16). All patients received self-help brochures. The control group received brief counseling, but other groups received intensive counseling, free supply of NRT and/or a free hypnotherapy session within 7 days of discharge, as well as follow up telephone calls at 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, and 26 weeks after discharge. Patients receiving hypnotherapy also were taught to do self-hypnosis and were given tapes to play at the end of the session.

At 26 weeks after discharge, 50 percent of patients treated with hypnotherapy alone were nonsmokers, compared with 50 percent in the NRT/hypnotherapy group, 25 percent in the control group, and 15.78 percent in the NRT group. Patients admitted with a cardiac diagnosis were more likely to quit smoking at 26 weeks (45.5 percent) than patients admitted with a pulmonary diagnosis (15.63 percent).

The researchers note that hospitalization is an important opportunity to intervene among patients who smoke.

This study as presented at Chest 2007, the 73rd annual international scientific assembly of the American College of Chest Physicians.

   Smoking/ general habit breaking-

                                       WHY?

Like any habit, smoking is incredibly hard to break by willpower alone because this has become what you do and to an extent who you are. You begin to rely on cigarettes (or other habits) in certain situations, and associate smoking or nail biting for example with certain activities- especially stressful activities or situations. After just the first or second cigarette the choice to smoke is no longer within your conscious control, so when you decide to give up it is extremely difficult. Non-smokers do not think about or desire cigarettes because it is not a program running in their brain.

Hypnotherapy can make you a non smoker  or ex nail biter or break any other habit by changing you back to your original program of 'I am a non smoker/ nail biter/skin chewer etc' in the brain. It is as simple as that!

However there are some things that you may like to do in order to enhance your success with Hypnotherapy.

  • Have your Hypnotherapy to quit smoking or break your habit when you know that the stresses in your life are manageable
  • Invite your friends and family to actively help you after hypnotherapy by not talking about or bringing cigarettes into your environment for a short while . Ask them not to talk about your habit (even how well you are doing) for a short period.
  • Ask yourself honestly and be aware of , those around you whose interest it may be in for you to continue to smoke. i.e.beware of those who may unconsciously want to sabotage your attempt.
  • Realize that you are not giving up smoking or your habit but stopping smoking/ habit. There is nothing to give up only wonderful benefits to gain
  • Think of the MONEY and how you are going to spend it or how fabulous your nails will look after your reward manicure etc!!!

Breath work for calm and meditation techniques for stress are also an additional help when using hypnotherapy to instigate the cessation of smoking or any habit caused or used in stressful situations. I will also thus teach you a replacement breath technique to combat the loss of the 'draw' or to cope in moments of stress.

Once upon a time you were a healthy non-smoker or had beautiful nails. Once upon a time you did not think about or desire cigarettes or chew your fingers to the bone!

Once upon a time you were fit, healthy, gorgeous and not out of breath!

As long as you possess the desire to quit any habit, then my quit smoking  or habit breaking hypnotherapy program will enable you to become a non-smoker or just be completely in control once again
